  ee's Best of Summer 2008

In homage to that tried and true back-to-school writing exercise, the "what I did on my summer vacation" theme, we thought we'd share
what made our summer especially laugh-friendly this year. (Is there
any doubt that we're beach people?)

The Annual ee Rehoboth Beach Family Extravaganza

To the Beach, Mama!

Hands down, taking Eve to the beach and watching her speed race into the ocean with zero inhibition or fear! Truly, it was beautiful to watch  and be part of (albeit a tad scary, too). The sound of her laughter is as clear to me today as when she was splashing in the waves! She truly  loved the beach and now brings out her bathing suit and says, "For the beach, Mama?" Eve won't be able to remember this vacation most    likely; however, I have pictures that exquisitely capture our vacation    at Rehoboth this year. Seems like so much good comes from this little beach town. We love it!  - Elena

Life is INDEED a Beach!

As I have become older (and an older Mom!), summer has snuck in to become my favorite season. For so many years, I longed for those crisp mornings of the Fall that brought with them the notion of the kids going back to school. Now, however, I cherish these lazy, fun-filled days of summer that quite frankly aren't too lazy at all.

We have started a tradition the past few years of kicking off the summer with an eastern shore beach vacation. There is this wonderful house in Rehoboth, Delaware that we have kind of adopted. And, at least this year, it was the highlight of our summer. The cottage is located in a residential neighborhood about four blocks from the beach and the famous Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.

And that is what makes this experience particularly special. There are friendly lifelong residents and a street lined with older homes of manicured lawns and abundant flower gardens. If there weren't an ocean at the end of the street, you'd swear you were in your grandmother's neighborhood-it's that quiet and sweet! It takes my sister and me back to a time of simplicity when you would sit outside on summer afternoons, listening to the singing cicadas and waiting for the ring of the ice cream truck. It is like stepping back in time.

Now toss in all our children, the grandparents, family friends and MORE friends; mix it with morning bike rides; big bacon and pancake breakfasts; sandy beach excursions; boardwalk games and rides; crab feasts; and top it with a walk together in the late evenings for soft ice cream and truly, what more could you ask for?

I sigh a BIG sigh at this memory and my heart looks forward to our visit again next year.

                                               Summer of '68 Redux

Since I recently left Nashville, TN after more than 15 years and resettled in a sleepy, small town in the Shenandoah Valley, the trip to Grandma's house (mine) is no longer 680 miles, but a mere 80-mile scenic drive. And this summer, a visit rekindled the sweetest memories of  the Summer of '68.

Only a few weeks ago, I suddenly was no longer the grandmother of      five, aging gracefully (for the most part); I was an excited 23-year-old mother of three getting winded inflating a vinyl pool as my two older children - Elizabeth at four and her brother Michael just two (Elena was  an infant) - danced around the sprinkler in glee, anticipating toddler cannonballs and gigantic perfect waves!

But my eyes deceived the summer haze of my memory.  These children were not Lizzie the Lizard and Michael, Michael Motorcycle! Here were three happy, squealing sprites - my grandchildren - Julienne and   almost-twin cousins Evie and Christian. As their mothers and I     watched and listened, we were each immersed in the old memories      that peeked out of mental photo albums - even as new memories were being developed before our eyes.

We laughed and giggled. Elizabeth and Elena seemed like kids again, and   I witnessed another generation making a memory that will someday become the Summer of '08 Redux.

The Summer of Ocean, the Baby Sea Turtle

It was like something out of The Wonder Pets. Maybe Go, Diego Go! My four-year-old son, my sister, and I were in the ocean on the very first day of our vacation when all of a sudden, my sister exclaims, "Look, Rangeley! A turtle!" And it was. But not just any turtle. It was a loggerhead sea turtle hatchling who had crawled out of a buried nest in the dunes on the Isle of Palms, SC the night before and made his exhausting journey down to the surf-and then gotten stuck in the current, apparently. When we found the baby turtle in pretty shallow water late in the afternoon he was clearly not where he was supposed to be. So anyone who doesn't believe in providence, good luck, or that things happen for a reason, read on.

That morning I had been reading up on the island's several turtle nests. They're a big deal around the barrier islands of SC, what with loggerheads being federally protected endangered species and all. I was trying to find out if there were any turtle-y activities my preschooler might participate in-you know, education, nature, a little local culture. My husband rolled his eyes. In my research, I just so happened to read about what to do in the event that you discover one of these cute (they really are, I'm not kidding) creatures in distress. My sister ran for the bucket, which we filled with sand and some water, and we brought him home-temporarily of course, until the IOP policeman came to pick up the little guy at our cottage (another big deal that perhaps rivaled the sea turtle in my son's estimation).

I admit I took some photos first, but baby Ocean (so named by Rangeley "because he lives in the ocean") was released that night under the moon (navigation) during optimal tidal conditions. Loggerhead sea turtles can live to be about fifty years old if they make it past the perilous first hours of their lives. That means that some day, Ocean might be out there swimming when my little boy is visiting the beach with his own family, both of them all grown up. So best family vacation memory? Being animal rescuers (just like in Rangeley's favorite shows) and sharing a memory to last a lifetime without even planning it. -Keaghan

Mommy's Gone to the Beach                                                           (and now she needs a vacation!)

My laugh-friendly memory of the summer is my family's traditional beach trip. It is a time of great fun for my children, and I'm truly grateful to be able to provide them this opportunity. For me, it is also quite stressful and expensive for two or three days at the beach. I ask, "Did you bring?", "Do you have?" and say, "Make sure you remember" over and over the morning we depart. In turn, during our three-hour drive, I listen to their complaints: "He's bothering me," "Stop it!", "I'm hungry," and, "are we almost there??"

Once we arrive and get settled in at the beach, a typical 48 hours for us includes awakening to see the sunrise, preparing for the beach, playing at the beach, meltdowns followed by much-needed afternoon rest time, more sunscreen application, playtime at the pool, putt-putt golf (which can get rather competitive), shopping on the boardwalk, rides at the amusement park, indulging in funnel cakes, ice cream and icies, wonderful fattening foods for dinner, evening walks, kite-flying, go-cart rides, Uno card games, movie watching, playing hide-and-seek indoors, reading books before bedtime, and exhausted adults trying desperately to stay awake and make sure kids go to sleep.

The days go by very quickly, and the kids always want to stay longer. I truthfully explain to them that I need to get back to work. And within that truth is a deeper truth that reads, "Mommy needs a rest!"  -BlapherMJ

Do you love discovering new children's books?

Always wanted to try your hand at writing for kids?

Then you definitely will enjoy ee's EXCLUSIVE interview with Anil Hemrajani, founder and CEO of Big Universe, the world of online children's books!

We think the world of Anil and bet he makes history!  We're honored to have this interview with him.  Thank you Anil!!

ee: How was Big Universe born? Have you always been a fan of children's books? Did any particular individual or company inspire you to undertake this endeavor?
ah: I have always been a fan of children's picture books because these portray such a magical world, unlike the crazy world we live in. I was inspired to start Big Universe after twenty years of helping large companies build boring software systems and publishing technology articles and books. Having sold a company, I was looking to do something very different, something that would combine my passion and software/internet technology skills to help make our world a better place. After a lot of thinking, I felt the best place to start making a difference in the world was through education and the next generation, our kids. So, I decided to create a website for reading and creating beautiful children's books. This is how Big Universe was born.

ee:  Besides the Nana Star series, do you have any favorite stories on the site? Any favorite create-your-own stories that stand out?
ah: We have many great books on our site from both publishers and our members, so it's tough to pick favorites. Let's see . . . Some of my favorites are The Tree (from Illumination Arts), One Potato (from Mathew Price), I Don't Want To Go (from Lobster Press), and Grandma's Feather Bed (from Dawn Publications).  Many of my favorite books can be found in my virtual bookshelf on Big Universe: http://www.biguniverse.com/bookshelf/anil.

ee: Is there a Big Universe feature that's most popular?
ah: Not surprisingly, our two most popular features are reading and creating books. People love the ability to read wonderful books from our publishers online, using our Big Universe Reader software. They also love being able to express their talents using our Big Universe Author tool. For example, at present, about 10,000 books are read on our site monthly and since March 2008, we have had over 1,500 books created. So you can see that these features are quite popular with our members.

ee: What kinds of people is Big Universe reaching out to?
ah: Over 50% of our audience is made up of parents, teachers, & students (kids).  The remainder is a combination of authors/illustrators, librarians, and others.

ee:  What's most laugh-friendly about Big Universe?
ah: It is really satisfying to see that so many people absolutely love our site!  Between the thousands of books read and hundreds created each month, we have definitely struck a nerve. Also, reading blogs that rave about our site not only confirms what we see in our web statistics, but also is very rewarding and highly encouraging, particularly when you hit low-points in the process of running a business.

To read Anil's favorite stories, browse thousands of others, or to become a member and create your own bookshelf and e-books (along with the many other features that make the site pretty awesome), visit www.biguniverse.com. And, of course, you can read Nana Star online while you're there: http://www.biguniverse.com/read/353!

Mommy Bloggers Love Nana Star

Nana Star continues to be be featured on numerous mommy blogs and the buzz continues to GROW!

Here are just a few of our favorite highlights from recent reviews. Follow the links to read the full post and see how Nana Star is on her way to becoming a "household name."

These colorful and easy-to-read books were a big hit with our family because not only could Girlie Girl read through them herself, but also because we found the Nana Star book series to focus on character building, compassion, and generosity. All very important traits I want my children to possess. [T]he whole Nana Star experience [is] fun and educational and definitely something my daughters will treasure for a long time.
An Island Review

Your little ones will love to cuddle up with posable, lovable Nana Star and friends. Our favorite besides Nana Star is Moonman. The Bean loves kissing and pushing his little star on his chest to see his sweet face light up the night. Overall I really love this series of books. My boys really loved listening to the CD at story time and enjoy acting out the story with the plushies. Make sure you check out nanastar.com to learn more about this awesome project and how Nana Star is changing the world.
The Domestic Diva

Beautifully illustrated and paired with the accompanying dolls have the potential to remain treasured possessions well beyond girlhood. If you are interested in more traditional toys (and wholesome as opposed to certain - toys geared towards young girls these days) and stories for little girls, then Nana Star will surely satisfy.

Smiles!

A Sunday school teacher was  explaining the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds.

After discussing the commandment to "honor thy father and thy mother," she asked "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?"

Without missing a beat, one little boy answered, "Thou shall not kill."

How does a spoiled rich girl change a lightbulb?

She says, "Daddy, I want a new apartment."

Did you ever wonder?

Can you cry under water?

If money doesn't grow on trees then why do banks have branches?

Since bread is square, then why is sandwich meat round?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up like every two hours?

Why are you IN a movie, but you are ON TV?

How come we choose from just two people for President and fifty for Miss America?
