ee interviews Mark Hoog,
author of
Letters from Katrina

Q: What was the inspiration behind the book?
The inspiration for the entire project, in the beginning, was just to somehow get involved in the rebuilding process along the Gulf Coast. I was watching coverage on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and was struck by how little had been done - how many had been forgotten. I remember thinking, "What will be the ramifications of an entire generation of Mississippi children being sent the message that they don't count, that their lives don't matter and that they are forgotten?" That day I visited an elementary school in Colorado and had students begin writing letters inside of some of my books. When I saw what the students were writing I knew something special was taking place. That day the project Letters From Katrina was born.
Q: What do you hope readers (both adults and kids) take away from Letters from Katrina?
I hope adults find inspiration in our youngest generation. Children don't ask about race, gender, religion or economic status. The children want simply to help, to make a contribution and freely share their friendship, hope and inspiration with total strangers.
I hope that when children read the book it reminds them of the ability they have to change the world simply by sharing with others words of encouragement and friendship.
Reading the book, everyone will be reminded of the five words that will change the world: "Will you be my friend?"
Q: Do you have a favorite letter or photograph in the book?
There are so many great letters and pictures, but there is one letter from a 5th grader that I think captures the true essence of the project. He took the book, found a corner in the gym, and two minutes later brought the book back with the following words:
"Sometimes you have to tear down the walls of convention with a wrecking ball of creativity."
Many times I think we, as a society, are at a place where all of us need to get creative, find our own gifts and talents, and begin sharing them with society to tear down the walls of convention. It is up to each of us to be a part of the change we wish to see in the world. This project demonstrates what our youngest generation wishes to see in their world.
Q: What's the Endowment all about?
The endowment was created for the children and families in Hancock County, Mississippi and all of the profits from the Letters From Katrina book are donated to the endowment.
Currently only 15 % of the children in Hancock County can afford to go to college. My goal is to change that. The mission of the endowment is to create a scholarship for EVERY child in the county so that all who want to receive a college education can.
Many of our goals and dreams are tied to education, and I believe that every child should have the opportunity to receive a college education. Hopefully the endowment will make it a possibility for the incredible children who survived Hurricane Katrina.
Q: What has been most laugh-friendly (inspirational, rewarding, fulfilling) about the project?
The most laugh-friendly part of the project is watching the reaction people have when they read the book. The words are heartfelt, the images are powerful, and the message is life-changing. To see words from children inspire so many and even move them to tears has been the biggest reward of the project.
Special congratulations to Mark - Letters to Katrina was recently nominated in the "Most Inspirational to Youth" category by the Independent Publisher Book Award.

What We've Been Up To
Nana Star was busy in April-and she won't be slowing down all summer between appearances, festivals, and trade shows!
We cannot thank everyone at the Children's Network of South Florida enough for being so, so thoughtful and accommodating to us when we appeared at their rally on April 27! Marie, you have yet another great talent as a gift basket designer! (The basket never made it to the airport because it was devoured while getting Nana Star ready!). And David, all our thanks for being a wonderful Moonman and letting your goodness shine through-Marie was right when she said she found "the perfect Moonman!" The "Protect Our Children" rally and fair was a great success and an inspiration. We're humbled and very glad to have been a part of this worthy event promoting the safety and well-being of children. |
Chick-fil-A in Chantilly, VA
April Franz at Chick-fil-A deserves a big laugh-friendly medal for kindness. WOW! Talk about a fun event! April spread the word about us and our sign language interpreters in the most generous, wonderful way - we can't believe how much she's done! We think the greatest gifts are those given completely unselfishly and without any fanfare, so thank you April for being "an angel among us!" We're off to the Reston Chickfil-A for another Family Night on Thursday, May 22 - everybody come along! You can find out about Chick-fil-A's commitment to kids' character development at www.chick-fil-a.com. Laugh-Friendly Kudos!
Early this month, Elizabeth and Elena's mom and ee's illustrator and graphic guru, Linda Saker, moved from Nashville to an exurb of the Washington, DC area in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.
Moves can be stressful and many things can happen to cause delays. We want to recognize Eric Kronenwetter with Coldwell Banker Premier Propertiesin Front Royal, Virgina and Michelle Hardy with MBH Settlement Group in Winchester, Virginia for their unflappable good humor and praise-worthy competence that helped Linda's move get over some unexpected rough spots. Linda is settling in nicely and thrilled to be near her daughters, grandchildren, and simply loves the mountain views and country living. |

A few late Spring giggles . . .
One summer evening during a thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice,
''Mommy, will you sleep in my room tonight?'' His mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug.
''I can't dear,'' she said. ''I have to sleep in daddy's room.''
A long silence was broken at last by his little voice.
''The big sissy.''
A truck driver was driving along on the freeway. A sign comes up that reads "low bridge ahead." He tries to turn off but, before he knows it, the bridge is right there and he gets stuck under it. Cars are backed up for miles.
Finally, a police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks around to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, "Got stuck huh?"
The truck driver says, "No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas"
The Magician and the Parrot
There was magician on a cruise ship, and he was really good.
He was performing the highlight of his show when a parrot walked onstage and squawked, ''It's in his sleeve!''
The magician chased the bird away.
The next day the magician was performing his highlight again (in front of a smaller audience) when the parrot walked onstage and declared, ''It's in his pocket!''
The next day, as he was performing the highlight, he saw the parrot in the crowd. But before the parrot could ruin the magic trick, the boat crashed into a rock and sank.
The magician was lucky enough to find a board to hang on to. On the other end of the board was the parrot.
The parrot said "I give up - where did you hide the boat?"

SUPER FRUITY SANGRIA
This Sangria recipe maximizes the fruit content and adds a new twist, using a white wine, instead of the traditional reds. Get ready for a yummy treat - this fruit-punch like flavor that is perfect for a backyard BBQ this summer.
INGREDIENTS:
1 Bottle of your favorite white wine (This recipe is just as delicious with a good red wine, if you so choose)
1 Cup sliced strawberries
1/2 Cup lemonade or limeade
2 shots of apricot, peach or "berry" flavored brandy
Optional: one can of diced pineapple pieces with juice
PREPARATION: Pour wine in the pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon, orange and lime into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and add sliced peaches, strawberries limeade/lemonade, sugar and brandy. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale and ice just before serving.
If you would like to serve right away, use chilled white wine and serve over lots of ice. | |
