Little Twinkles take good manners EVERYWHERE

Nana Star wants her Little Twinkles to have fun when going out in the neighborhood to trick-or-treat.  But do not leave good manners at home. Before heading out, remember to be polite, respectful and safe.

  • If a porch light is off, move to the next house.
  • Don't knock or ring the doorbell too many times; give your neighbor time to answer the door.
  • Be sure to say "Trick-or-treat, please!" and always say "Thank you!" when a treat is given to you!
  • After receiving a treat, leave quickly to let other children approach. Don't ask for more.
  • Be respectful on all property and do not leave any trash.
  • It's all right to trick-or-treat in other neighborhoods if the home community is unsafe or unwelcoming. But don't travel around just to get more candy.
Halloween Safety Tips

Nana Star also wants her Little Twinkles and all of their friends to be safe when participating in the wonderful tradition of Trick-or-Treating on Halloween. Here is a list to help parents and those who will share in this fun-filled event! For more advice visit the website for the National Safety Council.

A Parent or responsible Adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.

                               Remind Trick-or-Treaters:
  • By using a flashlight, they can see and be seen by others.
  • Stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where you are going.
  • Only trick-or-treat in well known neighborhoods at homes that have a porch light on.
  • Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.
  • Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.
  • If no sidewalk is available, walk at the farthest edge of the roadway facing traffic.
  • Never cut across yards or use alleys.
  • Never enter a stranger's home or car for a treat.
  • Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations.
  • Always walk. Never run across a street.
  • Don't assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn't mean others will.
  • Never consume unwrapped food items or open beverages that may be offered.
  • No treats are to be eaten until they are thoroughly checked by an Adult at home.
  • Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible Adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
  • Although sharing is encouraged, make sure items that can cause choking (such as hard candies), are given only to those of an appropriate age.
